Visit the ancient village of Cu Da

An old gate in Cu Da village
In addition to Duong Lam ancient village, Cu Da village is one of the typical Vietnamese village in the northern delta. The Culture and Information sector is planning a conservation plan. Tailor-made tour to Vietnam for families

Located 20km west of Hanoi, Cu Da ancient village belongs to Thanh Oai district on the outskirts of Hanoi. Cu Da is known as an original and unique space where still preserves the old gates at the village and every hamlet, the old temples, shrines and houses with original architecture style of northern delta region and ancient houses with French architecture dated back to over 100 years ago.

Situated on the bank of Nhue river, Cu Da village has become a bustling business place, a wealthy village that justifies the saying "Close to market is best, close to river is second". The golden time when Cu Da village was most developed were the last years of 19th and early 20th centuries. Cu Da not only has a big gate at the beginning of the village but all hamlets have it's own gate. Elderly people say because of thriving business Cu Da village was also a working place of thefts, in order to protect security in the village each hamlet built a gate to prevent bad people. The roads in the village are paved with inclined tiles, the walls stand close together, at night the gate were locked with wooden doors. This is a rare feature in the villages in north Vietnam. Vietnam customized holiday

Arrive in Cu Da village on an early day of the year, we seemed to be daydreaming in a certain country picture of the early 20th century. The village gate is an arch shape with curved roof, 2 columns on the sides are embossed Chinese characters make it looks like a bell steeple of a pagoda. Cu Da village is adjacent to Hanoi, it belongs to former Ha Tay province. The beauty of the village is nestled by the surrounding Nhue river. Before when the river was not polluted children were seen swimming around while ferry boats traveling along. The scene of thriving business once upon a time still remained in the brick steps that reach out to waterfront.

However the ancient features of the village are relics. The village's main road is the transportation route along the river bank, each lane that crosses the main road has a gateway modeled after the ancient village gate. This fishbone model is typical for an ancient Vietnamese village on the riverside with economic morphogoly of both commerce and agriculture

The front side of the village is not only the gate, Cu Da village has 3 gates including the middle one, but also include the landing strip in the river port. The advantage of the village is "Close to market is best, close to river is second". The narrow lanes run towards every house, all lanes are very deep and long. There are still many old houses, if based on the dating engraved on the frame of the wooden houses, the number of houses aged 100 years or more are more than 30, these houses are roofed with Vietnamese tiles, and the number of 70-80 year old houses are uncountable.

While many villages in Vietnam no longer have old houses Cu Da village still has many, and people of Cu Da village started to realize the value of their old houses since the Japanese scientists visited the village, they began to understand the economic and cultural value of the village once Cu Da is upgraded and recognized as a key tourist destination. Another ancient feature of the village is a pagoda named Linh Minh Tu with the original stone pillar marking the year when the village was restored in Hau Le dynasty 1695, and the recent archeological findings has extended the age of Cu Da ancient village to about 2000 years.

It is the discovery of ancient bricks, the typical of the tombs of Chinese colonial time dated back to 20 centuries ago. There is also a high mound call Dong Gia, the archeologists say it is a brick tomb built in the Chinese colonial time. The discovery showed that the village was one of the earliest formed in the region and the places with such brick tombs were usually economic centre, a thriving society.

Notably there are ruins of a platform built with green stone that people call worshiping place. Besides the ancient beauty the village also has modern charm, they are the houses built in French time 1920 - 1940 that look very western. By the river is a towering flagpole built in 1929. There are about 50 houses with western style in the village. At that time Cu Da is the only village in the region with road lighting. During this time people of Cu Da village went to Hanoi and open business, they set up factories, workshops, merchants...A series of rich families in Hanoi take their brands with first name "Cu" such as Cu Doanh, Cu Chan in the textile, Cu Phat...in order to remember their native land.

Business people went to live in Hanoi also brought money home to build houses and buy land. Traces remain in the two green stone toad statues placed at the river port, on the base pillars are engraved Chinese characters "Van Co Nghiem Nhien" (Eternal solemnity and wealth). There are holes in the statues for the oil lamp, it is a "lighthouse" for the boats trading on Nhue river found their way at night.

The village currently has a few dozen two-story French architecture pretty sophisticated but harmonious with the traditional style of the northern delta. Most of the old houses in the village are made of wood, on roof tiles. The villa of Trinh The Sung family was built over 130 years ago has undergone 4 generations. Despite many ups and downs the house is still intact. As he wanted to preserve and maintain the traditional culture the families do not want to rebuild it.

Coming to Cu Da village, visitors not only discover the ancient features of the villages but also have the opportunity to witness the active production and characteristic flavour of vermicelli, a traditional job of Cu Da.

People who are original of Cu Da village come back to the village on 14th Lunar January and burn incense for their ancestors. cu Da village is also famous for 2 special things: Cu Da soy sauce and vermicelli. Soy sauce of Cu Da is one of the best in the country, still very popular in Hanoi region. Cu Da vermicelli is also the main item. Coming to Cu Da village you will find vermicelli being dried everywhere. With many advantages in terms of relics and a busting craft village, Cu Da is worth to be considered as a tourist destination for ancient Vietnamese village still preserves the traditional shades. Another strong point in terms of tourism is Cu Da village is very close to Hanoi centre, only about 20km from city, you can visit it by motorbike or push bike on a day trip.

Come and find out.

Cheap holiday destinations in Vietnam
Cheap holiday destinations in Vietnam
1 - Yen Bai
In the map of Vietnam travel, Yen Bai is a less known destination for international tourists compared to Sapa or Ha Giang, however as Sapa and Ha Giang have become more and more touristy in recent years, Yen Bai is emerging as an attractive spot for travelers, especially travelers who want to discover the off the beaten track places that still retain the authentic characteristics and the untouched charming beauty of a mountainous region. I would definitely recommend Yen Bai as the top destination for budget travelers, there is no high end 4-5 star hotels or resorts and other money consuming facilities. Travel to Yen Bai you stay in basic guesthouses or homestay in the villages, eat local food prepared by local friendly people.
Some attractions in Yen Bai
- Paddy terraces in Mu Cang Chai
- Thac Ba lake, one of the biggest reservoirs in Vietnam
- Suoi Giang village, famous for ancient Tea trees
- Luc Yen precious stone mines
- Dangerous mountain passes and beautiful H'mong villages of Ta Xi Lang, Lim Mong, Phinh Ho...

Lai Chau:
My most favourite place in the northwest, Lai Chau is an ideal destination for adventurous travelers. I have been to Lai Chau 2 times in late 1990s when this province was not divided into 2 provinces Dien Bien and Lai Chau. The feeling of riding a motorbike on winding passes or cross the Nam Na river in flood season, watching sunset from the Hang Tom bridge was unforgettable. I still remember the time when our car was broken on the way, it took us half day to fix it and we had to travel to Pha Din pass in the middle of the night in heavy rain in order to arrive in Son La on time the next morning. Now part of Lai Chau has been under water with the completion of Son La hydro power plan. What impress travelers the most in Lai Chau is the bridges hanging precariously over the rivers, on the other side of the bridges are poor and simple stilt houses of Mang ethnic people. There are not many landscapes in Lai Chau however this region has it's own attractions, the tranquil space of mountain and forests, magnificent nature with wild villages hidden on the hill side. With over 20 ethnic minority groups Lai Chau is really a hideaway from bustling cities
Some attractions in Lai Chau:
- O Quy Ho and Pha Din passes, considered the most spectacular passes in north Vietnam
- Sin Ho and Muong Te districts, note that you must have permit to visit these places
- Pu Sam Cap, a complex of caves and grotto system at an elevation of over 1300 m
- Dao San market
- Hill tribe villages Na Luong, Pu Dao and Vang Pheo
- Herbal bath in Sin Ho
- Ma Ly Pho commune in Phong Tho district
- Tea plantations in Tam Duong

Nam Dinh:
Nam Dinh province is about 90km from Hanoi. Nam Dinh is not famous as a tourist destination like the touristy neighbor Ninh Binh however this is just what make it more attractive for spiritual visitors who want to have some peace of mind on an excursion out of Hanoi. Actually Nam Dinh is very busy in early Lunar New Year with many cultural and spiritual festivals such Phu Giay festival, don't forget to take part in the human chess when you come here, Tran temple festival, famous as a secret place if you want to be successful in your career, Vieng market festival if you want to buy good luck for the new year...Not only that, you can relax on the white sand beaches of Thinh Long, Hai Hau and especially Quat Lam, considered as a "Red Light" beach break place for men ;) Ah, the Xuan Thuy national park is also an attractive place for nature lovers.
Some attractions in Nam Dinh:
- La Xuyen wood sculpture village, Tong Xa bronze casting village
- Phu Day temple festival, Tran temple festival, Vieng market festival
- Thinh Long, Hai Hau and Quat Lam beaches
- Xuan Thuy national park
- Co Le pagoda, Pho Minh pagoda and Bui Chu cathedral

Ha Tinh:
Ha Tinh is a small province in the narrow central part of Vietnam. On the map of Vietnam travel Ha Tinh is not a prominent destination however travelers will find it a nice surprise as this land has best attractions that are still untouched by tourism. Most famous is Thien Cam beach however Ha Tinh has more than that. I came to Ha Tinh 2 years ago on a survey trip and was really impressed with this land, what I liked the most about Ha Tinh is the friendliness of local people and food in Ha Tinh is so special that you cannot find anywhere else in Vietnam. If you want a quiet place with cheap price then Ha Tinh must be a candidate. Delicious food, decent accommodation, beautiful nature, friendly people, prices are very reasonable, what else can you expect?
Some attractions in Ha Tinh:
- Ngang pass: Located between Ha Tinh and Quang Binh provinces, the pass is not long with 6 km and 250m high however this is one of the most spectacular passes in Vietnam.
- Ke Go lake: An artificial lake in Cam Xuyen district, the lake likes between hill sides
- Thien Cam and Thach Hai beaches
- Hong Linh mountain
- Huong Tich and Thien Tuong pagodas
- Son Kim hot spring

Quang Tri
Known as the main battlefield in the war time, Quang Tri is the where the Vietnamese and American veterans want to come back and recall the old memories. But Quang Tri also boast other attractive places such as Cua Tung beach, Con Co island and La Vang holyland. If you visit centre Vietnam I recommend a day trip to Quang Tri, not only to learn about the painful past of Vietnam history but also enjoy the peaceful landscapes of this land. Plan a trip to Vietnam at low cost
Some attractions in Quang Tri province:
- Cua Tung beach
- Con Co island
- La Vang holyland
- Khe Sanh combat base
- Ben Hai river and Hien Luong bridge
- Vinh Moc tunnels
- Ancient citadel Quang Tri

Binh Dinh
Binh Dinh is a coastal province in central Vietnam. In my opinion Binh Dinh is even more attractive than famous Mui Ne, and the wonderful thing is that Binh Dinh is very quiet, tranquil and much less touristy than Mui Ne. If you want to have a few days relax on the beach with a tight budget I would recommend Binh Dinh. The beach in Quy Nhon town is long with many small bays.
Ideal time to visit Binh Dinh is in dry season, from May to August, during this time the weather in Binh Dinh is more moderate compared to neighboring places. The rainy season starts in Binh Dinh from September to December so you avoid going in this time.
Attractions in Binh Dinh province:
- Thi Nai lagoon
- Quy Nhon beach
- Phuong Mai sand dunes (recommend for lovers of sand surfing)
- Yen island
- Cham twin tower
- Cu Lao Xanh or Green island and Hon Kho island
- Ghenh Rang beauty spot
- Ham Ho tourist site

Kon Tum
Kon Tum province is in the north of Central Highlands, in the language of ethnic people Ba Na the name Kon Tum means a village by a big lake on the side of Dakla river. Aside from the legendary epics, this land on the central plateau is also attractive as the junction of Indochina where a cock crowing can be heard in three countries Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. Yeah, if you want to discover the mysterious of the central highlands and learn about the ethnic culture and keep the cost down you can choose Kon Tum. I can say that Kon Tum travel is attached with wildlife due to specific natural characteristics and the impression of gong culture of indigenous peoples.
Attractions in Kon Tum province:
- Wooden Cathedral, unique architecture, right in the centre of town
- Rong house Kon K'lor
- Bo Y border gate, the junction of 3 nations Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia
- Mang Den ecotourism area, considered as another Da Lat
- Ngoc Linh mountain, good for climbing and trekking
- Chu Mon Ray national park and Dak Bla river

Dong Nai
Dong Nai is the largest province in Vietnam, compared to other provinces in the south, Dong Nai doesn't have magnificent architecture works or seaside beaches however this land is blessed wonderful natural landscapes, suitable for nature explorers. Travelers to Dong Nai will enjoy the nuances of a southeastern region characterized by rivers, waterfalls and scenery.
People can visit Dong Nai on a day trip or weekend holidays, you can choose relaxation, river bathing, fishing, riding ostriches or enjoy the delicacies at one of many eco-tourist areas such as Mango Garden, Golden Scorpion, Tri An waterfalls, Dong Nai river resort...
One thing you need to know is that tourist sites and spots in Dong Nai are pretty far apart, and you need to set up an itinerary so that you can save travel time from place to place.
Some attractions in Dong Nai
- Long Khanh orchard, full of tropical fruits
- Nam Cat Tien national park
- Ba Chong rocks
- Giang Dien waterfall
- Buu Long eco-park
- Mango Garden eco tourism area

Tra Vinh
Among provinces of Mekong Delta, Tra Vinh is perhaps a less known destination for travelers however it would be a pity if you travel the Mekong Delta without setting foot in this land. Tra Vinh in my opinion is most diversified in terms of culture and religion. In Tra Vinh you can find the most beautiful pagodas with many styles of architecture, from Vietnamese, Khmer to Chinese. The temples are scattered throughout the province. In addition to the beaches, islands, large orchards and characteristic ecosystem of the mangroves forests makes Tra Vinh an attractive destination. An ideal choice for those who want to have a kind of spiritual and cultural tourism combined with ecotourism. And from my adjustment the young girls in Tra Vinh are most beautiful in the south ;) If you come to Tra Vinh in Lunar New Year you can attend many festivals of Khmer people like Ok Om Bok, Chol Chnam Thmay...
Some attractions in Tra Vinh:
- Buddhist pagodas and temples such as Hang, Phno Don, Ang, stork or Nodol pagoda...
- Ao Ba Om (Ba Om pond) romantic scenery of nature
- Ba Dong beach, you can enjoy seafood here with very reasonable prices
- Mangrove forest

Ca Mau
Ca Mau province marks the end of Vietnam territory on land with rural scenery and characteristic beauty of Mekong river delta. Coming to Ca Mau you will have a chance to row the boat through the maze of canals in the mangrove forest, enjoy the fresh air of U Minh Ha forest with immense cajeput forest, creating a fascinating wild beauty. The combination of forest and sea has made Ca Mau very attractive. Ca Mau is the only place in Vietnam where you can view sunrise on the east and sunset on the west of the sea. In addition, don't forget to explore Ca Mau national park and U Minh forest with diversified flora and fauna.
Weather in Ca Mau can be divided into 2 distinct seasons: Dry and rainy season. The climate is relatively cool as Ca Mau is surrounded by sea so ideal time to visit Ca Mau is from April to September. If you go to Ca Mau on this occasion you may encounter a vibrant atmosphere of a wet land with human and nature are intertwined creating a warm atmosphere.
Some attractions in Ca Mau:
- Ca Mau cape
- U Minh forest
- Ngoc Hien bird yard
- Hon Khoai and Da Bac islands
- Khai Long beach
- Trem river, I recommend a boat trip on this river with spectacular snenery on the sides.

Mekong Delta trip

Cheap tours in Vietnam At 7AM, our buddy, with his moto-friend, was there as promised to take us to the 7:30am bus to Càn Tho.... out of the goodness of his heart.....imagine that...what a guy! By now we are pretty fearless about getting on the motorcycles with all our gear.

Mekong floating market
Mekong floating market
To our surprise, before we even got to the bus station, a rolling bus stopped for us and our packs were quickly transferred. Before we realized what happened, we sat in the bus and were asked for the equivalent of $10 each for the trip. We realized it was outrageous for the rickety non air-co bus we found ourselves. Dave asked if everyone else paid that. "Of course," was the reply. I said okay let us out of the bus. The price dropped by $4 immediately. But with limited communication skills, we were still at the short end of the stick, figuring we were still paying double what we should for this class of bus. But it was difficult to justify getting off and spending an hour or two to find another bus which could save us three bucks each. This was a local rattling window type bus and, in the end, we gave in and chalked it up as a lesson learned. The lesson? We should have gone ahead of time to the bus office where prices are usually posted.

We insisted on having the front seats next to open window, which was one constellation. The landscape was fascinating and beautiful; the lush green landscape, the rice paddies, fruit orchards, vegetable fields. The entire trip followed rivers and we watched wonderful village life. Rice was drying on plastic sheets next to the narrow road. South Vietnam tours

Three hours into the trip, a wheel seized up. A front wheel bearing needed to be replaced. They lacked proper tools and the driver's assistant pounded on the frozen part of the bearing with a cold chisel for over an hour before he was able to cut it off so he could put a new one on. Overall, it took about an hour and half to fix and we continued.

Then the bus arrived at a cross road where they told us “Cần Thơ, Cần Thơ”. We figured maybe we were at a bus station outside of town because CT is supposed to be a good size town. Again everything happened really quickly. Before we realized what happened, we stood on the street with our packs, traffic zooming by and sweat pouring down our backs. "Let’s have a bite to eat here before heading into town." Dave barely took three steps before we were led by our hands across mad traffic to another bus. "To Càn Tho" a lady missing most of her front teeth, insisted. "No money," she said. We got on to the other rickety bus. It still turned out to be another 2.5 hour ride to Càn Tho.

At the real bus station, Dave negotiated hard for two moto taxies (ex om) to take us the final kilometer an a half to the riverfront. Those seem to be the main form of transport here in Vietnam. We had them drop us off at Sao Hom, a nice riverfront restaurant where we dined before looking for a hotel.  I had pizza and Dave a local fried noodle dish. It was expensive, for Vietnam standards and the food was excellent.

Dave scouted a half dozen guidebook recommended hotels and stumbled upon the one month new, Number 1 Hotel, a five story skinny mini hotel with very big and very nice air con rooms starting at $14 per day. There were plenty of cheaper places in town but this one was well worth a few extra dong.

Càn Tho
-Mani & pedicure 60000 dong / $3
-Night market food
-Rice cakes banana and coconut
-We interviewed boat tour people before settling with Thuy for a 6 hour private boat tour for $20.

5:30am floating market tour
--First stop Cái Răng wholesale floating market. (7km)
--Rice noodle factory
--Phong Dien floating market (18km)
--Mangrove and nature walk

Lâp, Thuy’s husband, was our boat driver and guide for today. He picked us up before dawn and we walked with him to where he had moored his small boat. We shared the river with a variety of boats differing in size from barges freighters and a variety of interesting wooden boats locals use. The river supports a wonderful mix of transport. On both sides of the wide river, we glimpsed narrow wooden or cement bridges with steady streams of people walking and cycling across.

Lâp pointed out the sun rising behind us as the orange glow spread across the sky.

Laden ferries crossed the river at frequent intervals, connecting the labyrinth of trails and roads through the delta.

As we approached Cái Răng market at a fork in the canal, a guy floated up to us calling out "coffee, tea hot or ice?" He had an efficient set-up and apparently didn't spill a drop. Why did we bother to bring our own cool drinks?

We got closer into the wheeling and dealing of this wholesale market and it was hopping!

Large wooden boats, loaded with piles of squashes, onions, cabbage, melons, mangoes, pineapples, and garlic, came here to buy and sell. People haggled and loaded and unloaded goods. It's a busy place. And ladies in small boats floated by to sell hot food to the hungry merchants.

Because we were in such small boat, Lâp easily maneuvered in between the tightest spots and we had a ball getting an up close view of fascinating cultural experience.

We watched a few large tour boats breeze by the perimeter, with megaphone equipped guides blasting stories in their ears. The bewildered tourist barely had time to frame a shot.

Our next stop was a rice noodle factory down a small side canal. They used pretty much the same process we had watched in the village in Cambodia except on a bit larger scale. The thin "crepes" are steamed for a few seconds then dried on racks in the sun and then put through cutter.

We returned to the main thoroughfare and continued along the channel to Phong Điền, another floating market. Phong Điền wasn't as big or lively as Cái Răng. It had the same fruits, rice, lunch boats and was less crowded this hour of the morning.

It was 8:30. “Ready for lunch?” Lâp asked. At 8:30?

We doubled back and turned left down a side channel and motored by houses with decks and platforms hanging over the water's edge. Villagers washed their clothes and bathed in the murky Mekong Delta river water.

After venturing into an even smaller channel, Lâp pulled the boat to a small diving board size dock. It was time for the nature walk!

Lâp pointed us to follow a dirt path next to the narrow waterway where Lâp shadowed us in the boat. At first we walked past durian and banana orchards.

Then we came to small bamboo house with large vegetable gardens, behind which, expansive lush rice fields opened up. A cute little girl came out with plastic bin and joined her parents picking beans. Continuing the hike, we heard frogs jump in the river ahead of our approach, so peaceful.

We suddenly got to a precarious bridge and I was sure to take a picture of a local lady when she effortlessly crossed it not realizing I would be next! I was not so nimble!

Birds were few. Then I heard chirp, chirp, chirp. Chirp, chirp, chirp. I looked and looked and tried to find what I imagined must be a colorful bird in the branches.
When the sound got closer, I realized it was little boy wearing fun squeaky-toy shoes!

Here the trail was paved and Lâp was waiting for us at the restaurant. It became 9:30 by now. It was high time for lunch!!

The boat ride back to Can Tho was every bit as scenic. We continued through the small canals in the mangroves before breaking back out to the wide expanse of the Can Tho river. More fishing boat with nets, more barges, more river life in general. We were back within the 5 to 6 hour estimate and would have been happy to keep going. It was all we had hoped for.....

More Time in Càn Tho
Amazing lunch
-9 Vietnamese eggrolls
-Vegetable soup
-tofu stuffed gourd
-2x fried somethings, crisps & rice
-green beans
-2x ice tea
-------------
Total 49000 dong ($2.39)

Yes, we have made Càn Tho our home a bit longer-than planned. It is relatively cool with nice afternoon breeze from the river cooling things. This is all relative. It is still 34c. We enjoy the town, life on the river, and the markets. It suited us for a week or so. Our hotel was comfortable and central located. The everyday stuff, like the different food we encounter, I like to write about.

For lunch today, we stumbled across this small place bursting at the seams with people eating and slurping. That is a good sign so we decided to give it a try. At the counter, we pointed to all the dishes that looked interesting to us. A table was cleared and a fan was pointed in my direction immediately. I guess they noticed the sweat pouring off my brow. And large glass mugs of ice tea were put in front of us. Next came the 9 Vietnamese egg-rolls. The vegetable soup followed by the tofu stuffed gourd, two fried somethings, crispy seasoned chips made of fried dough & rice, and green beans. It was all tasty and fresh, and above all, homemade. We asked for the bill, which spurred a big discussion among the staff. One girl was joined by another and they jabbered and jabbered. Then another person from the back joined them and a calculator was brought out. Dave and I looked at each other like "we've been had".  Finally, the calculator was pushed in front of us; 49000 dong ($2.39).

Lingering in Càn Tho
We had a second fabulous moonlit dinner at Sao Hom Riverside Restaurant. I ordered the fried Mekong fish and Dave had the crispy noodles with seafood again. It was another beautiful balmy evening. We watched the moon rise over the Mekong. Small boats scurried between the larger boats to cross the river. It appeared to be a chaotic mess of river traffic; ferrys crossing in between various wooden boats, small flat motor motorboats ferrying people back and forth, sometimes barely missing the larger ships, a free for all. It looks like anything goes but it appears to work.

Dinner was served. My fish was cleverly perched up between large toothpicks on a halved cucumber. The waiter then expertly operated on my fish like a surgeon and had it looking even prettier with both meaty sides curled down. He showed me how to fill the small rice pancakes with noodles, vegetables and fish then roll it tight and dip it in the tangy dipping sauce. What a treat. We lingered over this meal.

How to avoid problems in your Vietnam holiday

Vietnam cheap tours has been opened to the world for nearly 20 years and the tourism environment has improved over time, however there are still annoyances that trouble international travelers when they visit Vietnam. In this article I would like to mention some complaints that visitors encounter during their holidays in Vietnam

1 - Overcharge at tourist sites:
Travel Vietnam
Travel Vietnam
For years, the problem of overcharge, push and force customers to buy at exorbitant prices...has become commonplace at the tourist destinations, especially in high season such as festive season at the beginning of the year when the number of domestic and international tourists increase sharply. This problem can be seen at famous tourist sites such as beaches, temples, pagodas, mountainous landscapes...
Foreign visitors to Vietnam is always a good prey as the vendors try to sell stuff at double price or even more than price local people pay. They have to pay even when take a photo, when catching a taxi many drivers would drive you around for more money. One thing that makes travelers upset the most is service charge, many restaurants don't mention this on the menu and then put it on the bill at the anger of visitors.
What should you do when you are involved in this case? Remember to make things clear before you order a meal or book a service, make sure that you understand what is included what is not. And you can call the police if you think you are victims of these bad sellers. Vietnam custom travel

2 - Disorder of traffic condition
If you come to Vietnam for the first time you will be shocked at the situation of traffic in Vietnam, especially in big cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh city, at rush hours in the morning or late afternoon when people go to work or go home, thousands of cars, motorbikes, push bikes jostling and pushing for their way. Nobody seems to care about traffic rules. If you are a pedestrian looking for a line to cross the busy road you have to risk your life cutting through the endless stream of vehicles.
What should you do if you want to cross the street when there is no red light? Just keep walking slowly and have an eye at the traffic, don't run and don't stop and other people will know how to avoid you.

3 - Too many beggars
There are a lot of beggars at tourist attractions, especially at public places like temples, pagodas, parks...at the New year time festivals, beggars can be seen sitting and lying on the ground at the entrances, they follow visitors all the way begging for money, many visitors have to give money as this is the only way to get out of the beggars. Some people abuse small children and elderly by using them begging money from tourists. Visitors usually see a miserable woman carrying her sleeping child in hand sitting at the junction and make money from passers-by. Some visitors fell into her trap by giving money to the woman, however the money will go to pocket of the woman or the people standing behind her and not help the child. In such cases we recommend that you give them food and never give money.

4 - Environmental pollution
According to adjustment by the Global Environment Program of the United Nations, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh city are in the list of the most polluted cities in the world. In peak hours, smog from vehicles released can be seen everywhere. Not only that, local people and travelers suffer different kinds of noise pollution. Just go to street and you will hear the loud sounds of horns continuously until the cars start to move. The types of garbage littered every corner is something that visitors flinch. The walls were stained yellow with the smell making people sick. Especially in the rainy season, if we are struggling to find ways to cope flooding, the foreigners often take photograph and surprise as if this city is Venice.

5 - Poor safety and hygiene of food
Vietnam cuisine is very diverse, but the sanitary condition causing insecurity for many travelers. Especially for street food, many people sell food processing do not wear gloves, so exposed. Where the eating place is just next to a sewer system, filled with trash. Seeing that image is enough to attract tourists not brave enough to try out the delicious dishes. In many restaurants at tourist areas the kitchen is just close to toilet that is smelly and dirty. In the markets, many people use chemicals and drugs to make the vegetables and fruit look fresher, that's because growers have used the chemicals to stimulate the growth of produce from unknown origin and drugs with high toxicity that has been banned to spray for fruit and vegetables. Along with vegetables, the livestock (pigs, chickens, cows, fish...) were used to gain weight for livestock and poultry.

Eating in Hanoi
Hanoi cuisine has bold features of Trang An people's culture in the old time with it's own flavor. There are many delicacies for you to enjoy Vietnam tailormade holiday:
- Pho (noodle soup): the most characteristic dish of Hanoi. I have eaten Pho in Sai Gon and Nam Dinh but found Pho in Hanoi the best, Hanoi has all types of Pho: Pho Bo (Beef noodle) famous is Pho Thin in Bo Ho area (Hoan Kiem lake) or at 11 Lo Duc street, Pho Ga (chicken noodle) is famous at 172 Ton Duc Thang street and Quan Thanh street, also famous is Pho Cuon (rolled noodle) in Westlake, Pho Tron (mixed noodle) in Lan Ong street and Ap Chao (fried noodle) in Bat Dan street, each has it's own characteristics and is very delicious. I especially like Pho Cuon and always go to a small restaurant in Mac Dinh Chi street.

There are also lots of other featured dishes such as Com Lang Vong (young rice made in Vong village), Cha Ca La Vong (Grilled fish at La Vong restaurant), Bun Cha (Vermicelli with grilled pork), Banh Cuon Thanh Tri (Rice paper rolls), Banh Tom Ho Tay (Prawn cake in the Westlake), chicken feet, Vermicelli with shrimp sauce...

Eating in Hanoi is not as quick as in Sai Gon. Going to a restaurant you can choose the dish you like and enjoy it slowly. Ah, don't forget to check price before order. People from other cities with different accent and international visitors are sometimes overcharged, this is one of the bad things in Hanoi, but not common.

Day trip in Hanoi
If traveling Hanoi in 1 day you can tour around the city, and if time permits you can go to the tourist places in the suburbs. This is a typical itinerary:
- 6am: Take a walk around your hotel for a Pho or Bun Cha restaurant for breakfast, find a nearby cafe or a tea shop for a glass of ice tea, very good for digestion.
- 8am: Start from hotel to visit Ho Chi Minh mausoleum complex, remember to check open times, note that the mausoleum closes on Mondays and Fridays, you have to park the bikes outside and stand in the queue on Ngoc Ha street. After the mausoleum you can visit Ho Chi Minh museum and One Pillar pagoda and Uncle Ho's house on stilts.
- 9.30am Leave for Van Mieu (Temple of Literature), the first university of Vietnam, about 1 km away, you can ask the way from a local or a guard at the mausoleum if you don't have a map, continue to Tran Quoc pagoda, an ancient pagoda located at West Lake, about 2.5km from the mausoleum, you can visit Tran Quoc pagoda before or after the mausoleum.
- 11.30: After visiting Tran Quoc pagoda and West lake you can find a Pho Cuon restaurant nearby, there are some restaurants serving Pho Cuon in the area near Truc Bach lake and finish with an ice cream just across Tran Quoc pagoda.
- 13.00 Leave for museum of Ethnology, located on Nguyen Van Huyen street, about 10km from city centre, here you can learn about cultures of ethnic minorities in Vietnam. Museum of Ethnology is one of the most worth visiting places for foreign tourists to Hanoi.
- 15.00: Return to Hanoi centre and move straight to Hoan Kiem lake, park your bike and visit Ngoc Son temple, there is a sample of a giant dead turtle in the temple with it's legend about the lake, you may enjoy a walk around the lake and the Old Quarter, stop by a sidewalk restaurant and enjoy some famous of street food in Hanoi such as Banh Chuoi, Banh Khoai (cakes made from banana, sweet potatoes)
- 17.00 Time to go back to hotel for a shower and dinner, if you have time we recommend an 1 hour show of Water Puppetry, a traditional performance of Vietnamese culture
- 20.00: You have some choices, visit the night market if it is on weekend, the market is pretty crowded and you can see a lot of souvenirs, most imported from China and some second hand stuff, and handmade crafts. You can also ride a bike to Long Bien bridge for a view of Hanoi by night or go for a cup of Lemon tea at Ly Quoc Su street, just across the cathedral.

Visit Hanoi in 2 days or more
If you stay in Hanoi more than 1 day just spend the first day as above and you will cover most of the best sites in Hanoi. On the second day you can visit places on the outskirsts of Hanoi such as Bat Trang ceramics village, Duong Lam ancient village, the oldest village in Vietnam, Tay Thien Zen monastery and Tam Dao resort mountain, you are recommended to spend one night here, Ba Vi national park or Co Loa ancient citadel.
These places can be visited in a day except Tay Thien Zen monastery and Tam Dao mountain where you can stay the night as they are very beautiful.

Notes when you visit Hanoi
- Travel Hanoi in summer you should wear light clothes, easy to absorb sweat as it is really hot. Conversely if you go to Hanoi in winter you should bring a jacket as temperature sometimes drops below 10 degrees.
- There are many pagodas and temples in Hanoi and you travelers should wear long pants and dresses...to religious places or visit the mausoleum.
- The Old Quarter is like a maze and you are recommended to have a map with you.
- You should bargain when you go shopping at the markets of Hanoi, however the sellers are superstitious and not polite and window-shopping is not welcomed in the morning especially if you are the first customer to their shop and the sellers would think that you bring bad luck to them for the whole day, and the price you bargain should not be too harsh or just pay one price and go, it is best to pay a price once and then add up a bit, even if you don't buy you should thank the seller before leaving, tell them that you want to see more of other goods before deciding whether to buy or not.
- People from other cities to Hanoi especially those who have different accent would be given a high price when you go shopping or catch a taxi motorbike, this is practical experiences told by my friends. However if you know in advance and consider it a natural way it would be more comfortable, just laugh and don't get upset with them.

Finally, I wish you a Hanoi trip with so much pleasant experience. If you have any worry or questions feel free to contact me and I'm happy to help. And if you come to Hanoi in a short time and want me to be a casual guide for free just ring me up ;)

How to arrange a tour in Vietnam at low cost

You are planning to travel Vietnam with tight budget? Don't worry, our tips below will blow your concerns away.

1 - Choose the destination
Cheap Vietnam tour package
Cheap Vietnam tour package
Before planning the your cheap tour to Vietnam for family, you need to think about the places of your interest and time of the trip. Please note that peak season in Vietnam is from October to April. Avoiding this time you can save up to 30% of your tour cost. In peak season cost for accommodation, eating, services at tourist sites are certainly more expensive than usual

If you just need a place to "unwind", you can choose the suburbs, or the historical sites for a fascinating trip. Consider the destinations by referring to information on the Internet, learn about the attractive promotion tours before starting to plan next steps

2 - Modes of transport
Consider the places to choose means of transport is by plane or train. With cheap airlines, you need to book tickets for a long time to get the best ticket deals. You can combine the routes of different airlines to save costs to the maximum. Especially if you want to extend the trip to other Indochina countries like Laos, Cambodia or Thailand.

If you just budget travel in Vietnam, tourist open buses is a comfortable mode of transport to keep the cost down. Motorbike is also a pretty good way of saving money, but you must always ensure the safety issues as well as the quality of your bike in a long trip, many backpackers travel Vietnam from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh city by motorbikes, they purchase a bike in Hanoi, travel all the way south to Ho Chi Minh city and then sell the bike before going home, however in many cases the bikes were broken on the way and they had no choice but buy another to continue the trip.

3 - Eating in Vietnam:
Vietnam is a long country with diversified culture, each region has a different taste, southern food tends to be spicy and sometimes difficult if you are not used to it. It would be a great idea to try some food on the streets, a very Vietnamese life style. The street restaurants sometimes give you an authentic feeling of the region.

Also, you can save a bit more by not including breakfast at hotel so that you can try local food outside or stay in bed a bit late. An alternative is to carry cooker so that you can make the food yourself with local materials. Self cooking will be very interesting if you're traveling in the forest such as trekking, especially in northern mountainous region of Vietnam such as Ha Giang, Sapa or Mai Chau valley.

4 - Sleeping in Vietnam
Naturally you need to take all 3 star hotels out of the list. What you need to do is search for information online and make a booking, thus you will save costs and ensure the plan. From my experience, most hotels have a last minute prices that is 50 % cheaper than public rates, however it would be risky as you need to wait until the last day to have this price, please consider carefully as it may affect your plan.

In some family hotels or guesthouses you can share the room with 6 people, some hostels offer dormitory for backpackers with just 3 USD per person for a night stay. In Hanoi and Sai Gon there are many cheap hotels in the backpacker areas

5 - Bring less cash
Simple ways to save money is the less cash you bring the better it is for you. When you travel in Vietnam you can easily get cash at ATM which are available in most cities, it would be better to use local currency to buy small things such as a cigarette pack or a bottle of water. Please keep the money remaining in the card so that you can restrain the lust for shopping

Do not forget to spend money shopping at the duty free shops at airports that will save you a lot. Saving a bit of everything that you can have a sizable amount for the trip.

Five best beach vacation islands in Vietnam

Travel Vietnam with low cost: Lying along East Sea with a coast of over 3000km in length, Vietnam has up to 2770 off shore islands offering paradise beaches in Asia, ranging from north to south with different features and attractions. What make the islands very attractive to visitors is the wild natural beauty of these islands without the impact of tourism, not only attract tourists with pristine water and white sand beaches, the islands are also a complex of diverse ecosystems such as tropical forests, mangroves, Coastal fauna...On these islands, the natural landscape is virtually unchanged and still preserve the unspoiled sceneries. Within the frame of this article we would like to name five best islands that you cannot miss if you have a chance to visit Vietnam.

Ly Son island, a hidden gem
Phu Quy island
Phu Quy island
Ly Son island district belongs to Quang Ngai province in central Vietnam, this used to be one of the less developed islands in Vietnam, the fastest way to get to Ly Son is by high speed boat from Sa Ky port in 45 minutes, Ly Son island has a long history where 3000 years ago the first people in Sa Huynh came and live here. Amid the ocean of waves and wind Ly Son island look like a giant sea turtle.
Coming to Ly Son island don't expect the to see the long sandy beaches or the luxury resorts, actually the best beach is in Little island, however in return Ly Son give you an experience you cannot find anywhere else: best fresh sea food, warm feelings and friendliness of local people. Tourism in Ly Son is not developed as electricity is on only from 17.00 until midnight, there are only a few basic hotels without hot water and few facility services, however please come to Ly Son with your heart, don't expect too much and you won't be disappointed when you come to Ly Son.
My tips you should know before coming to Ly Son island:
- There is only 1 high speed boat from Quang Ngai to Ly Son island daily departing at 7 am.
- Contact the hotels before coming as there are few hotels in Ly Son, and please note that there is no hotel in Be (Little) island, the only choice is homestay
- You should bring along battery as electricity is on only a few hours at the end of the day

Phu Quoc island, paradise on earth
Phu Quoc is the largest island in vietnam with total area 566 square km. For a long time Phu Quoc has been famous with beautiful beaches and primitive forest however until recently tourism on Phu Quoc has been booming as visitors can reach Phu Quoc island by flight from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh city, and with the installation of national power grid on the island the price of services especially hotels has become more reasonable.
In general traveling to Phu Quoc island is not cheap, most of your expenses will go to hotel and airfares however in return you will have a chance to relax at picturesque beaches and enjoy the discover the unspoiled beauty of the island. My advice is don't go to Phu Quoc with organized tours, the only thing you need to do is book your flight and hotel in advance, and once you are there I recommend that you rent a motorbike and explore the island yourself. There are some nice beaches like Sao beach, or Cua Lap beach however these place are always crowded as there are many hotels and resorts nearby, my favourite place is Long beach about 25km from town and you will be amazed by the beauty of this beach.
Eating in Phu Quoc island is pretty cheap as there are many restaurants in town, a lot of people go to have dinner at the night market that serve mostly seafood however if you want to taste the fresh seafood please go to Ham Ninh fishing port, about 10km from the centre.
For more information of Phu Quoc island I will come back with another article about this island.

Con Dao island
For a long time Con Dao island is known for the horrible prison built by the French in the war time as the hell on earth, from mid 19th century until the reunification of Vietnam in 1975 more than 20.000 Vietnamese prisoners was killed. However the painful past of Con Dao island has become history, today Con Dao is one of the best resort islands in south Vietnam, especially those who want to experience the wild natural beauty and unspoiled environment of an island not impacted by tourism.
Compared to other island, Con Dao has full factors of a majestic landscape as it is formed by an archipelago with 16 large and small islands, each has it's own characteristics which will bring you interesting and different feelings. The common point of these islands is the big and diverse range of coral reefs with many formations. My tip for you is that spend the whole day to explore the majestic beauty of these coral reefs.
As tourism in Con Dao is not developed as other places there are only a few hotels of which the best is Six Senses resort where Bratt Pitt and Angelina Jolie brought their family here for a holiday in 2011. The beaches in Con Dao is one of the best in Vietnam, the waves is little, water is green and pristine although there is not much sand, the beach are surrounded with rock cliffs, you can spend the whole day sitting on the rock watching the sea from sunrise to sunset without being annoyed by local vendors. The only thing that made me disappointed about Con Dao island is eating, there are only a few simple restaurants that serve mostly fish. My recommended places you should visit in Con Dao island is Phu Hai camp, Hang Duong cemetery, Shark cape (note that don't go in the late afternoon as it is very windy on the pass), also there is a very beautiful little beach close to Co Ong airport, you can reach it by motorbike only.

Phu Quy island in Binh Thuan
I came to Phu Quy island 2 years ago and was really impressed with this pretty island. The name Phu Quy means "wealthy" making you think of prosperity of this island, Phu Quy has another name Cu Lao Thu, geographically belongs to Binh Thuan province, about 55 miles southeast of Phan Thiet port.
Phu Quy island is not only rich in marine resources, but also rich in natural beauty of the majestic, the quiet coastal road bending around the island. People who live on the island are not rich in money, but rich in hospitality, you can always see the smiles on the faces of local people, this is exactly what left me the best impression when wandering about on my native land.
Travelers can go to Phu Quy island by high speed boat in 3 hours or bay cargo boat in 6 hours, for the nature lovers Phu Quy island is really a paradise for its wild beauty, services and facilities on the island are rather basic, once you are here don't forget to try King crabs and fresh squid, better than anywhere. There are some family guesthouse on the island equipped with air-conditioner however the national power is on until 23.00 only after that people use generator for electricity. What you need to consider is weather, my advise is to check weather 3 days before departure and must have substitute plan since there is no boat to Phu Quy island in bad weather.

Co To island in Quang Ninh
In recent years Co To island has become a favourite destination for young Vietnamese travelers. Like Phu Quy island, Co To still preserve the wild setting of nature with deserted beaches and windy hills, many couples come to Co To island to taka wedding photos. As one of the outpost islands in Tonkin sea there is a military base on Co To island, perhaps it is one of the reasons that tourism development in Co To is not encouraged although there are more and more people visiting this island. There are only several simple hotels in Co To and a state run guesthouse under Co To district people's committee that all foreign tourists have to stay there when they are in Co To.
The thing I like the most in Co To island is to rent a motorbike and explore the beauty of the island myself. The beaches in Co To in my opinion are the best in Vietnam such as Hong Van, Vam Chai, Little Co To, and don't forget to visit Co To lighthouse when you are there.
Eating in Co To is easy as there are many restaurants on the island however I recommend that you have dinner at your hotel as it will be cheaper than outside, for lunch you can check Uy Thanh restaurant, food and service is good, around 10 usd/person.
There are several ways to reach Co To island from mainland, I recommend that you take a high speed boat from Cai Rong port in Van Don (1.5 hours) to Co To and on the way back catch a normal boat from Co To to Bai Chay in Halong city, it takes longer by normal boat however you have a chance to enjoy the breathtaking beauty of Bai Tu Long bay during the journey.

Da Lat rock climbing

Becca and I went rock climbing in Dalat today and escaped from my mom "the manicurist" who is very pissed off at me for not towing the group ideology. Family tours to Indochina with low cost

She attempted to make us feel bad and jealous by saying that it was more fun going in a group.

Da Lat rock climbing
Da Lat rock climbing
I had to lie to my mom and told her that we had already paid for our "tour" of hiking in the waterfalls and that she would be unable to climb some of those falls and that's why we wanted to go.

My mother does not want me to go rock climbing ever and probably would have physically forced me to stay with the group activities that she had planned if she had known that we were going rock climbing 01

Although it was difficult to escape again, I am glad we did since we had a wonderful day of rock climbing and were away from my mother and crew.

Rock climbing in Dalat is still a very novel idea since everyone goes to Dalat to rappel, hike, swim or golf. Most of the climbs here are top rope and there are three major companies that have guides to lead tourists like us to rock climb. There were actually some very difficult climbs (5.7-5.11s).

According to our English speaking guides, there are NOT a lot of women who come to Dalat to exclusively climb. I was actually the first "Viet Kieu" (male or female) that he has lead on a guided tour of rock climbing in the four years the tour company has been opened.

I don't think they've ever seen women climb as hard as we did!

I was asked out by many of the young Vietnamese tour guides that day and even got several marriage proposals since in the Vietnamese culture, being '30' is old. Many of the Vietnamese men can't figure out why I haven't married yet.

After a semi-good day of climbing in the waterfalls and me falling numerous times in the water (and getting my ass slapped as a way to help me out of the water by my guide), Becca and I got dropped back at the center of town where I had to buy new pants that weren't soaking wet. Becca also wanted to get my mother a 'thank you' gift of something other than money. Budget tours in Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia

As I went to check out sizes for my new pants purchase, the sales girl immediately told me that I could not wear the size small. I am a size LARGE here. Yes, I have a complex, since in the US, I am an extra petite small!

Coincidently, we meet up with my mother and crew at the hotel. They once again tricked us into having dinner at the evil woman's house when we thought we were going to go to a restaurant.

We ended up at the evil's woman house for another 4 hours. When we finally got tired of sitting around and asked to leave and have Sun to come back to pick them up later, I was blamed for being impatient and that I was selfish for not allowing my mother to stay to learn 'trigger point' even though it was selfish of her to kidnap us for 4 hours.

We once again had to do everything in a group. It was a weird concept to have us dropped back at the hotel room.

Becca went back to the hotel room to sleep since we were leaving early in the morning back to Saigon (aka Ho Chi Minh City) and I went and had beef pho with Tuan and Sun.

It was a fun night trying to exchange Vietnamese and English words and culture.

Apparently the Vietnamese must have $100,000 in the bank in order to migrate to the US (the average salary of a person here is about $100). Otherwise, you have to have a relative or a fiancee to sponsor you.

As to start a business here, one must have $18,000 in the bank in case their business fails, which is sort of like their version of business insurance. Like most countries, many businesses here are started 'illegally'.

Here is Becca's experience:

The highlight of the trip was breaking from the group and going on a day-long rock-climbing tour. We swam near waterfalls and were very bad ass.

Lorran even got a slap on the ass from the tour guide for falling in
the creek bed numerous times (apparently in Vietman, this is the way to
check if someone is okay when they almost drown).

The other highlight of the trip took place at the table with all of the family over a discussion of fake meats. We were going down the list of "fickin" (fake chicken),
"facon", etc...lorran held up her piece of fake duck, and I absent-mindedly
blurted out "fuck" before I realized what I had said.

Her parents laughed, though they didn't quite understand why I said it (terets?). We tried to explain, but I fear we were unsuccessful.

Diving in Nha Trang

Nha Trang scuba diving
Nha Trang scuba diving
Had to get up early today for the diving. The bus left for the harbour at 0730, and we had a quick breakfast in the 45min boat ride to the dive site.

Arild went with a instructor on his first dive and I got a divemaster all to myself. Which is good, then I would have plenty of time to make pictures if I would like. The first dive was good, the visibility was better than I thought. Yes it's not 20+, but it was good enough to see things. And I saw a lot, I even had a friendly visit with my beloved nudiebranches again;) counted a lot of them;) my buoyancy was a bit off, don't know if it was me or the fact that it was kind of a funny current in the water. I didnt feel too good either, felt like I was about the puke underwater, and when I got up I was dizzy. But I still went through with the second dive. The best part, Arild liked it!!!!!!!!! His comment was that it was much better than he thought it would be and he was looking forward to his second dive. Indochina adventure tours

He wants to me to write that he has now overcome his fear of fishes, especially those who comes up to you and tries to steal your regulator.

The second dive we started together and I got some pics of us together;) after a while we lost them but contiuned on our own. We had some swim throughs and we saw the rare frog fish. That was a funny creature, it doesn't swim very well and looks funny. The picture doesn't show the fish very good, but it was easy to look at underwater. I didn't feel that the buoyancy was any better this dive, I didn't feel better either. But I liked the dive and so did Arild. I can now see the chances of him doing his Open Water certificate;) that would be so good, then it will be our second hobby in common;)

After the diving we were both exhausted and ended up sleeping from about 14-1630. We got up after a fight with the bed. Neither of us wanted to get up, we just wanted to sleep. But an early night was waiting for us so it didn't give us much of a choice. We went to a restaurant, one that seemed to be full with locals. The food was good. I had garlic prawns that I had to peel myself, which to 30 min or more and by the time I started eating Arild had eaten his steak a long time ago. Cambodia, Vietnam tour packages

After dinner we went to this awesome Spa place. We bought "tickets" at our hotel and we thought we were only up for a massage. Oh no... First I had to strip, I got disposable panties, gown and some shorts. Then they put us in a barrel filled with hot herbal water before putting us into a bubblebath tub. Next was a steam sauna and a normal sauna. It was way too hot for me, and since I still didnt feel too good, I didn't stay there long. Next was bodywash. I had a guy scrub and wash my body before getting into a big cold bubble pool. We stayed here too long in our eyes, before they guided us into a relax area. We thought we were finished, but no... Now it was time for the 1 hour massage that we booked for in the first place. The massage was really good. I had a tiny Vietnamese girl walking on my back and as well normal massage. It wasn't too hard, it was just right. I think this is one of the best massages I have ever had. Even the hot stone massage I got from her was good. The last one I had in Hue wasn't any good so I was sceptical. But it all was very good. Arild really enjoyed his as well, but I'm not sure what he enjoyed the most, the flirty attentive girl who gave him a massage or the massage itself. Yes, I got s bit jealous;p *laughing* I think it was more the massage and me getting jealous part he liked the most;p.

Indochina adventure, down the Mekong river

Mekong river market
Mekong river market

Visit Vietnam Indochina

If you have time enough consider taking 1 or 2 days to Tra Vinh and Soc Trang, Tra Vinh is famous for pagodas and temples built by Chinese, there used to be a Chinese community in Tra Vinh and Chinese culture are left in the cultural works like pagodas, monasteries. And Soc Trang is largely inhabited by Khmer people, originated from Cambodia, Khmer people still preserve their culture through festivals and worships, Soc Trang is also known for Bat Pagoda with hundreds of thousands of bats inhabited in the pagoda, a fire a few years ago burnt most of the pagoda and it was rebuilt.

How to get cheap Vietnam and Cambodia tours

Indochina vacation package
Indochina vacation package
The Vietnamese has a saying "Cheap is not good and good is not cheap, you get what you pay for". The saying is especially true in Vietnam tourism where there are hundreds of travel companies and tour operators claiming to offer high quality products at cheap prices. Many backpackers travel to Indochina try to keep the cost down by visiting travel forums, reading reviews from other travellers about hotels, transports...trying to find the best services within their budgets.

Consider a typical tour package to Vietnam usually includes hotel accommodation, flight or train tickets from this city to the next destination, meals, transfers between hotels and airports...not to mention medical insurance, drinks, laundry, telephone...Visitors from neighbouring countries like Thailand, Malaysia or Singapore can keep save the cost by taking cheap air carriers such as Air Asia which operates between South East Asia countries.

You can get cheap tours to Vietnam and Cambodia by booking a package tour through a local travel agent, with all services included except meals, it is always cheaper to book a package than all services separately, keep in mind that most of your tour cost will go to accommodation and transports, as Vietnam Airlines is almost the only carrier in Vietnam there is no choice to keep the airfares down by flying with a cheaper airline, actually Jetstar and some local airlines are operating as cheap airliners however these providers only operate between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh city, the two biggest cities in Vietnam at each end of the country, and these two cities are only starting and finishing points where travellers enter and leave Vietnam.

Accommodation take a large part of your tour cost, the more professional hotels in the city centres of Hanoi, Sai Gon, Hoi An, Hue or Nha Trang offer higher prices than hotels in the outside areas, generally it cost about 50 usd for a room at a 2-3 star hotel including breakfast, there are some rooms at cheaper 20 - 30 usd however these rooms usually are at the corner of the building has don't have a view, and travel agents work with hotels on contract rates so that they can have better price than public or walk-in rates

It is advisable to have your transfers between hotels and airports included, it will save your time and probably your money as you will not face taxi touts who sometimes have their speedometers faster than average to get money from you.

Taking group tours instead of private tour is also a good way to keep the cost down, most tour operators organize join group tours to famous destinations such as Halong Bay, Sapa, Mekong Delta...Travellers will share the transports, usually by shuttle bus with other group fellows, the buses are generally clean and comforable with aircon, some inconveniences are visitors will have to wait for the bus to pick up every passengers at different hotels, and traffic conditions in the morning in cities like Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh city is really bad, sometimes you have to wait for an hour or so for the bus to pick you up.

Additionally you can travel Vietnam in low season, which last from May to October, during this time most tour companies, hotels and airlines offers promotion to travellers, July and August is flood season in the north and rain season in the south, a trip to Halong Bay may be cancelled by bad weather however this is the best time to visit North Vietnam as it is dry and sunny most of the time, Halong Bay can be best seen in this time and the rice terraces in Sapa are most beautiful.

Coming to Vietnam in low season you have a chance to acquire discounts for most services you book, actually you can have a bit of luxury at tight budget if you are a smart traveller, you can still have a decent cheap tour to Vietnam at an affordable price.
