Da Lat rock climbing

Becca and I went rock climbing in Dalat today and escaped from my mom "the manicurist" who is very pissed off at me for not towing the group ideology. Family tours to Indochina with low cost

She attempted to make us feel bad and jealous by saying that it was more fun going in a group.

Da Lat rock climbing
Da Lat rock climbing
I had to lie to my mom and told her that we had already paid for our "tour" of hiking in the waterfalls and that she would be unable to climb some of those falls and that's why we wanted to go.

My mother does not want me to go rock climbing ever and probably would have physically forced me to stay with the group activities that she had planned if she had known that we were going rock climbing 01

Although it was difficult to escape again, I am glad we did since we had a wonderful day of rock climbing and were away from my mother and crew.

Rock climbing in Dalat is still a very novel idea since everyone goes to Dalat to rappel, hike, swim or golf. Most of the climbs here are top rope and there are three major companies that have guides to lead tourists like us to rock climb. There were actually some very difficult climbs (5.7-5.11s).

According to our English speaking guides, there are NOT a lot of women who come to Dalat to exclusively climb. I was actually the first "Viet Kieu" (male or female) that he has lead on a guided tour of rock climbing in the four years the tour company has been opened.

I don't think they've ever seen women climb as hard as we did!

I was asked out by many of the young Vietnamese tour guides that day and even got several marriage proposals since in the Vietnamese culture, being '30' is old. Many of the Vietnamese men can't figure out why I haven't married yet.

After a semi-good day of climbing in the waterfalls and me falling numerous times in the water (and getting my ass slapped as a way to help me out of the water by my guide), Becca and I got dropped back at the center of town where I had to buy new pants that weren't soaking wet. Becca also wanted to get my mother a 'thank you' gift of something other than money. Budget tours in Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia

As I went to check out sizes for my new pants purchase, the sales girl immediately told me that I could not wear the size small. I am a size LARGE here. Yes, I have a complex, since in the US, I am an extra petite small!

Coincidently, we meet up with my mother and crew at the hotel. They once again tricked us into having dinner at the evil woman's house when we thought we were going to go to a restaurant.

We ended up at the evil's woman house for another 4 hours. When we finally got tired of sitting around and asked to leave and have Sun to come back to pick them up later, I was blamed for being impatient and that I was selfish for not allowing my mother to stay to learn 'trigger point' even though it was selfish of her to kidnap us for 4 hours.

We once again had to do everything in a group. It was a weird concept to have us dropped back at the hotel room.

Becca went back to the hotel room to sleep since we were leaving early in the morning back to Saigon (aka Ho Chi Minh City) and I went and had beef pho with Tuan and Sun.

It was a fun night trying to exchange Vietnamese and English words and culture.

Apparently the Vietnamese must have $100,000 in the bank in order to migrate to the US (the average salary of a person here is about $100). Otherwise, you have to have a relative or a fiancee to sponsor you.

As to start a business here, one must have $18,000 in the bank in case their business fails, which is sort of like their version of business insurance. Like most countries, many businesses here are started 'illegally'.

Here is Becca's experience:

The highlight of the trip was breaking from the group and going on a day-long rock-climbing tour. We swam near waterfalls and were very bad ass.

Lorran even got a slap on the ass from the tour guide for falling in
the creek bed numerous times (apparently in Vietman, this is the way to
check if someone is okay when they almost drown).

The other highlight of the trip took place at the table with all of the family over a discussion of fake meats. We were going down the list of "fickin" (fake chicken),
"facon", etc...lorran held up her piece of fake duck, and I absent-mindedly
blurted out "fuck" before I realized what I had said.

Her parents laughed, though they didn't quite understand why I said it (terets?). We tried to explain, but I fear we were unsuccessful.

Diving in Nha Trang

Nha Trang scuba diving
Nha Trang scuba diving
Had to get up early today for the diving. The bus left for the harbour at 0730, and we had a quick breakfast in the 45min boat ride to the dive site.

Arild went with a instructor on his first dive and I got a divemaster all to myself. Which is good, then I would have plenty of time to make pictures if I would like. The first dive was good, the visibility was better than I thought. Yes it's not 20+, but it was good enough to see things. And I saw a lot, I even had a friendly visit with my beloved nudiebranches again;) counted a lot of them;) my buoyancy was a bit off, don't know if it was me or the fact that it was kind of a funny current in the water. I didnt feel too good either, felt like I was about the puke underwater, and when I got up I was dizzy. But I still went through with the second dive. The best part, Arild liked it!!!!!!!!! His comment was that it was much better than he thought it would be and he was looking forward to his second dive. Indochina adventure tours

He wants to me to write that he has now overcome his fear of fishes, especially those who comes up to you and tries to steal your regulator.

The second dive we started together and I got some pics of us together;) after a while we lost them but contiuned on our own. We had some swim throughs and we saw the rare frog fish. That was a funny creature, it doesn't swim very well and looks funny. The picture doesn't show the fish very good, but it was easy to look at underwater. I didn't feel that the buoyancy was any better this dive, I didn't feel better either. But I liked the dive and so did Arild. I can now see the chances of him doing his Open Water certificate;) that would be so good, then it will be our second hobby in common;)

After the diving we were both exhausted and ended up sleeping from about 14-1630. We got up after a fight with the bed. Neither of us wanted to get up, we just wanted to sleep. But an early night was waiting for us so it didn't give us much of a choice. We went to a restaurant, one that seemed to be full with locals. The food was good. I had garlic prawns that I had to peel myself, which to 30 min or more and by the time I started eating Arild had eaten his steak a long time ago. Cambodia, Vietnam tour packages

After dinner we went to this awesome Spa place. We bought "tickets" at our hotel and we thought we were only up for a massage. Oh no... First I had to strip, I got disposable panties, gown and some shorts. Then they put us in a barrel filled with hot herbal water before putting us into a bubblebath tub. Next was a steam sauna and a normal sauna. It was way too hot for me, and since I still didnt feel too good, I didn't stay there long. Next was bodywash. I had a guy scrub and wash my body before getting into a big cold bubble pool. We stayed here too long in our eyes, before they guided us into a relax area. We thought we were finished, but no... Now it was time for the 1 hour massage that we booked for in the first place. The massage was really good. I had a tiny Vietnamese girl walking on my back and as well normal massage. It wasn't too hard, it was just right. I think this is one of the best massages I have ever had. Even the hot stone massage I got from her was good. The last one I had in Hue wasn't any good so I was sceptical. But it all was very good. Arild really enjoyed his as well, but I'm not sure what he enjoyed the most, the flirty attentive girl who gave him a massage or the massage itself. Yes, I got s bit jealous;p *laughing* I think it was more the massage and me getting jealous part he liked the most;p.

How to get cheap Vietnam and Cambodia tours

Indochina vacation package
Indochina vacation package
The Vietnamese has a saying "Cheap is not good and good is not cheap, you get what you pay for". The saying is especially true in Vietnam tourism where there are hundreds of travel companies and tour operators claiming to offer high quality products at cheap prices. Many backpackers travel to Indochina try to keep the cost down by visiting travel forums, reading reviews from other travellers about hotels, transports...trying to find the best services within their budgets.

Consider a typical tour package to Vietnam usually includes hotel accommodation, flight or train tickets from this city to the next destination, meals, transfers between hotels and airports...not to mention medical insurance, drinks, laundry, telephone...Visitors from neighbouring countries like Thailand, Malaysia or Singapore can keep save the cost by taking cheap air carriers such as Air Asia which operates between South East Asia countries.

You can get cheap tours to Vietnam and Cambodia by booking a package tour through a local travel agent, with all services included except meals, it is always cheaper to book a package than all services separately, keep in mind that most of your tour cost will go to accommodation and transports, as Vietnam Airlines is almost the only carrier in Vietnam there is no choice to keep the airfares down by flying with a cheaper airline, actually Jetstar and some local airlines are operating as cheap airliners however these providers only operate between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh city, the two biggest cities in Vietnam at each end of the country, and these two cities are only starting and finishing points where travellers enter and leave Vietnam.

Accommodation take a large part of your tour cost, the more professional hotels in the city centres of Hanoi, Sai Gon, Hoi An, Hue or Nha Trang offer higher prices than hotels in the outside areas, generally it cost about 50 usd for a room at a 2-3 star hotel including breakfast, there are some rooms at cheaper 20 - 30 usd however these rooms usually are at the corner of the building has don't have a view, and travel agents work with hotels on contract rates so that they can have better price than public or walk-in rates

It is advisable to have your transfers between hotels and airports included, it will save your time and probably your money as you will not face taxi touts who sometimes have their speedometers faster than average to get money from you.

Taking group tours instead of private tour is also a good way to keep the cost down, most tour operators organize join group tours to famous destinations such as Halong Bay, Sapa, Mekong Delta...Travellers will share the transports, usually by shuttle bus with other group fellows, the buses are generally clean and comforable with aircon, some inconveniences are visitors will have to wait for the bus to pick up every passengers at different hotels, and traffic conditions in the morning in cities like Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh city is really bad, sometimes you have to wait for an hour or so for the bus to pick you up.

Additionally you can travel Vietnam in low season, which last from May to October, during this time most tour companies, hotels and airlines offers promotion to travellers, July and August is flood season in the north and rain season in the south, a trip to Halong Bay may be cancelled by bad weather however this is the best time to visit North Vietnam as it is dry and sunny most of the time, Halong Bay can be best seen in this time and the rice terraces in Sapa are most beautiful.

Coming to Vietnam in low season you have a chance to acquire discounts for most services you book, actually you can have a bit of luxury at tight budget if you are a smart traveller, you can still have a decent cheap tour to Vietnam at an affordable price.

Visit Indochina with local transport, fun way to travel

Budget tours usually attract a large number of travellers as they provide visitors a chance to travel at the cost as low as possible. Cheap package tours to Indochina is a good way for budget visitors to keep the tour cost down, instead of booking day trips and excursions separately you are recommended to book a tour package including all transfers, accommodation, tours and meals.

Vietnam transportation
Vietnam transportation
Join group tour is a smart way to keep the budget low, although it is not very comfortable to travel with other people with fixed itinerary, sharing the meals and transports however you will have a chance to share information and tips from other fellow travellers, and naturally you have a safer feeling to travel with a group.

If join group tour is not what you are interested in and want to discover the places by yourself while keeping the cost within your budget you can travel independently using the cheapest services for your accommodation and transport.

In this part we will give you some suggestion about public transport system in Vietnam

Public transport system in Vietnam is pretty good, public buses are always available at the station, in Hanoi alone there are 4-5 main bus stations like My Dinh, Nuoc Ngam, Luong Yen and Gia Lam stations, it cost about 5-8 usd for journey within 200km, from Hanoi to Halong Bay costs 6 usd, the buses depart from My Dinh and Luong Yen which provide journeys to the north, Luong Yen station is just 10 minutes by taxi from Hanoi centre while My Dinh is about 40 minutes, from Luong Yen you can catch a bus to Halong, it takes 5 hours to reach Halong city and the bay area is just 5 km from the bus stop. As Halong is one of the main destinations in the north the buses are pretty available, the bus is clean and airconditioned, try to avoid small minivans as they usually stop many time on road to pick up more passengers and there is little room in these vehicles. Holidays in Vietnam and Cambodia

To get to Sapa budget travellers are recommended to take the night train, it will save your time and energy, public buses run from Hanoi to Lao Cai everyday however there are only 2 trips a day and they start very early in the morning at 4 and 5 oclock in the morning, and after a lengthy journey 11 hours you will reach Lao Cai town and then catch a short drive 30 km from Lao Cai to Sapa, although the road from Hanoi to Lao Cai has been upgraded several times it is still very bumpy in outside city areas.
Some transport companies also offer overnight bus service to Lao Cai at 20 usd/person, the vehicle is big and clean, each passenger has a small bed with 2 bottles of water, at the moment this service only available at weekends when tourists take their holiday to Sapa.

Mai Chau used to be a hot destination in north Vietnam, Mai Chau is located in Hoa Binh province, in early 1990s a lot of tourists travel from Hanoi to Mai Chau to visit ethnic minority poeple, trekking and stayed in the village homestay. To get to Mai Chau from Hanoi you need to catch a public bus to Son La, as Mai Chau is at the end of Hoa Binh province territory, the bus to Hoa Binh will stop at the city centre and you will need to take another journey from Hoa Binh to Mai Chau 80km, fares for bublic bus from Hanoi to Son La is 6-8 usd depending on types of vehicle, most buses depart from Thanh Xuan station which is about 30 minutes taxi from Hanoi centre, most buses depart in the morning before 10 oclock, some other buses depart from My Dinh leaving around midday

Indochina vacation packages

Indochina vacation packages
Indochina vacation packages
The world financial crisis has badly affected the Vietnam tourism and budget Indochina vacation packages, the number of travellers have fallen in recent years, especially visitors of high end standard, travellers tend to choose mid range services for their trips, and the local tour companies as well as travel service providers are trying to put down the tour cost in order to attract more tourists. It is not an easy task to keep the cost down while retaining quality of a trip, however if you plan your trip wisely you can still have a memorable trip at low budget. Vietnam is an attractive destination in Asia, one of the most worth visiting places in the world where travellers can find everything from beaufitul sceneries, history, cuisine, diversified culture...

Planning a trip 2 months in advance is recommended, as Vietnam suffers one of the worst inflations in Asia and prices change more often than not. There are something you need to keep in mind such as visas, you can obtain visas on arrival, this service can be arranged through the local travel companies, it will save you a lot of time and money, because if you arrange the visas yourself you need to contact Vietnam embassy or consulate in the city you live, it takes time and costs you more than the travel companies in Vietnam, it would be much better to take the help from a local visa company, all you need to do is provide them your names in full, passport numbers, date of births, gender and nationality, it takes about 3-4 working days to get "Visa letter approval", it will be sent to you by email along with a Visa Application form, you just need to fill out all information, stick your photos on it and pay 25 usd/person when you arrive at Vietnam's airports to get the official visas, this kind of visas will allow you to stay in Vietnam in 1 month, you can easily extend your visa through a local travel agent when you are in Vietnam and Cambodia tours

Cheap tours to Vietnam can be planned by yourself if you considers some tips and guide and thus save some money for the trip. Lonely Planet, Rough Guides and Trip Advisor are useful sources of travel information however not everything is correct and updated. You can ask for assistance from a local travel agent, most travel companies will give you correct and useful information, in the main cities like Hanoi or Sai Gon, most travel agencies are focused in a certain area, that's the Old Quarter in Hanoi and Pham Ngu Lao - De Tham area in Sai Gon, you can also take the help from online tour companies, which are booming in recent years, it is recommended to contact them directly for information rather than what is available on their websites and the info may have been outdated. Once you are in Vietnam you can also get information about taxi fares, entrance fees or transports to destinations from the hotel travel desks, most hotels have a travel division to help their guests, and one tip when you want to go out is to arrange your taxi through the hotel or the restaurant, it may be risky if you catch yourself as taxi drivers may take you to longer way for more charge. In this way you can make your trip to Vietnam cheaper and safer, and to avoid the troubles as much as possible.

Most tourist sites in Vietnam charge visitors some small fees to get in, normally it cost 1-2 usd for each place such as museums and historical buildings, in some famous spots which are declared as the world heritage sites such as Hue, Hoi An, Phong Nha cave, My Son holyland entrance fees are higher, from 4-5 usd/person, in Halong Bay visitors have to pay 7 usd for day cruise and 13 usd or more for overnight cruises, however this fee is usually included as part of the package

Travellers can also use public transports to get to destinations, the public bus system covers all the tourist destinations in the country, it costs just 1 usd for short distances within the city and about 5 usd for longer trip to other cities, public buses are clean and rather good however it is slow as the buses stop many times during the trip to pick up and drop passengers. Open tourist bus is also a good choice for budget travellers, however there is little choice as this service is only available in the main tourist cities such as Nha Trang, Dalat, Muine, Hoi An and Hue, most tourist open buses depart in the early morning and return in the afternoon of the same day.

Travel Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia

Travel Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia The number of tourists to Vietnam have increased very quickly in recent years. As an attractive destination in Asia Vietnam is becoming more and more favourite to travellers, especially from budget and middle class.

Hanoi city of Vietnam
Compare to neighbouring countries like Singapore or Thailand, travelling in Vietnam is cheaper, and that's why backpackers from Europe and Australia find Vietnam a paradise for their holidays. You can keep the tour cost in a very tight budget while still have a decent service for your trip, and this requires careful planning of your trip.

To help you plan the best budget tours to Vietnam, please take our tips when you are setting up your trip:
- Choose the destinations
Hanoi and Sai Gon are the two biggest cities in Vietnam, they are where you start and finish the trip, if you start in Sai Gon you will finish in Hanoi and vice versa. In the north there are some attractive sites like Ninh Binh, Sapa and especially Halong Bay, once you travel Vietnam you cannot miss Halong Bay, top in the list of Vietnam travel destinations.

Halong Bay is 150 km from Hanoi, there are hundreds of cruisers of "Junks" as they are called by the travel companies ranging from cheap to luxury. Most travellers go on 2 day tours which can be arranged easily by the travel shops in the Old Quarter of Hanoi, no matter where you book the trip you will go on the same tour with other people, as the tours are join group it cost around 40 usd/person in a twin cabin, food is included and you have to pay for your drinks. Avoid the boats with dirt cheap prices 20-25 usd as you will be packed in smelly buses and boats with rats or cockcroaches. Drinks on boats are a bit more expensive than average

The rural countryside spot of Tam Coc is 120 km south of Hanoi, travellers usually go to Ninh Binh for a day trip, a trip to Ninh Binh cost 15-20 usd/person for join group tour with lunch and entrance fees included, nicknamed "Halong Bay on land", Ninh Binh boasts typical rural sceneries of Vietnam with river, mountain, rice field, travellers can take public bus to Ninh Binh which departs from Luong Yen bus station for 5 usd, spend the day visiting Tam Coc and catch the night train from Ninh Binh to Hue

Up north to the Chinese border is Sapa, famous as the former French hillside resort, Sapa offers spectacular landscapes with rice terraces, winding mountain passes, ethnic minority groups and colourful weekend markets. Although Sapa has become touristy in the past years it still preserves original attractions, To visit Sapa travellers need to arrange train tickets from Hanoi, it cost aprox 30 usd for a ticket from Hanoi to Lao Cai (10 hours on train), most people take the night trains which depart from Le Duan Railway station, actually this is the most convenient way to go to Sapa if you don't want to torture yourself with 16 hours by public bus. There are many companies offering overnight train service and they are pretty much the same, generally there are 4 berths to a cabin, toilets are positioned at each end of the car, there is water, blankets and pillows as well as lighting system and a television set which shows white screen most of the time, backpackers can choose 6 berth cabin to save money, however it is really uncomfortable in this cabin as you have to hunch when sitting on the berth, actually this cabin types are only for local people who have small sizes.

From Lao Cai station you can catch a public bus to Sapa in 1 hour, there are plenty of bus just outside the train station and it cost 2-3 usd for a seat, they are not very convenient and the bus will not leave until the vehicle is filled.

Visit Central Highlands in Vietnam

We decided to continue north staying in the central highlands to the town of Buon Ma Thout (BMT) and travel in the day time. Le Phuong had never gone our route before because she never wanted to go through such a poor area. She called the bus station and reserved seats on the Mai Linh bus. It is the same company as the reliable and honest taxi company with the same name. She said it was safer than the others and hotel pick-up would be free. The medium size bus was old and we had seats near the back. The spacing of the seats was tight and we werecramped. Two strikes! Cheap tours to Vietnam

The scenery out the window was great from there. We wound up and down mountains and valleys along a narrow two lane road for hours. Butterflies flittered everywhere. They were the size of a Monarchs but with white wings and reminded me of snowflakes.

Central highlands Vietnam
Central highlands Vietnam
Our first stop was brief and quickly followed by another. We had a flat! We had pulled up at a repair shack on the road. It did not take long before we were on our way again. We lost about an hour though and still the driver wanted to take a leisurely lunch break. The cafeteria style food was not exciting but we didn't mind relaxing in the cool mountain air.

A half hour before BMT, the white billowy clouds in the blue sky were replaced by heavy rain clouds. We rolled into the BMT bus station during a cloud burst. The parking lot became flooded in minutes with three inches of water. I thought we should all wait in the bus until the worst was over but our bus assistant was hot to get the luggage off. He began pulling luggage out of the stowage and lined it up under the very short overhang of a building. It was getting drenched. I ran out to rescue ours and brought it inside the now crowded open sided restaurant.

While we waited for the downpour to subside, I ventured out across the shallow lake which, minutes earlier, was a parking lot. I got to the set of offices selling tickets. We wanted to get our tickets to Kontum in two days. The Mai Linh bus wouldn't stop in Kontum and I was directed to another bus company’s window across the aisle. I asked for two tickets for the 24th and they promptly delivered two tickets. But they were for today, the 21st! They thought I wanted tickets for the bus leaving in 10 minutes. With some struggle and help from others around who knew a little English, the ticket lady finally understood but gave me a big "Noooooo!" Two English words that all Vietnamese seem to know are "Hello", delivered in a flat unaccented American English when they answer their cell phones, and “no”. The “Hello” always fools me into thinking they might not be Vietnamese at all but then I look over and the dialog continues in rapid tonal Vietnamese. The “no” I find odd too. They seldom say 'no’ as in “no we don’t have bananas” but rather a emphatic sounding “NOOOOOOOOOO!”, like I just asked them if they minded if I light their hair on fire. It is not that typical but it happens often enough to seem funny. I concluded they can’t sell tickets that far in advance and left. Adventure tours in Vietnam

The rain got lighter and we took a taxi to a strip of hotels recommended in our guide book. Along the way we drove past 'Metro’, a slightly smaller version of Costco, ‘Coop-Mart’ and KFC. Wow! This is a big city by Vietnam highlands standards.

I kept an eye on our bags while Michelle ran into a nice sounding hotel option and was quoted 380000 VDong ($18). She still gets confused with those big numbers and initially thought it was way beyond our budget! She were not going to pay 380000 anything! We settled in an ‘okay’ room across the street for nicer sounding 200000 VND ($10). Then we discovered our air con didn't work and they had put a 5 gallon bucket in the shower because the shower didn't work right either. We complained. They didn’t try to fix the problems and instead reduced the price of the room to 150000 dong ($7.20). The room clean and the weather not super hot out so we decided to stay one night and move in the morning.

We walked in search of a restaurant recommended on Travel Fish. The instructions were cryptic but, with a little determination, we found it. They had gorgeous looking rotisserie chicken rotating on the barbeque out front. We were like dogs salivating in front of a butcher shop. They would not sell us the chicken. They referred us inside the simple restaurant where the food was not appetizing. We went back out and appealed for the appetizing chicken again. No dice. We walked away with our tails between our legs.

Lucky we discovered Nem NÆ°á»›ng, Vietnamese grilled meat skewers served with piles of vegetables, rice paper, and a dipping sauce, at a simple eatery two door from our hotel  You hand roll your choice of ingredients, dip, and eat. Nem nÆ°á»›ng is now one of our favorite Vietnamese dishes and, with all those veggies, its gotta be good for you too. Like a good taco stand, or like a good gyro stand, it is the sauce that makes it. I had a local beer. Bill for the two of us; 70 or 80000 VND ($3.40/$3:90). We ate at the equally tasty Nem NÆ°á»›ng next door the next night!

Self-Guide Moto Tour Around BMT, 100km
After moving to the hotel across the road, we rented a motorcycle. We planned two stops and it would turn out that we would not actually make it to either place!

35km north to Ya Liao is a 13th century Cham Tower
13km from BMT is Buon Tur a minority Village of Rhade,
And if we have time, circle south west and drive by Drai Sap Waterfall

BMT is modernizing but still has a small city feel, traffic is busy but not crazy or dangerous. After gassing up, we drove northwest toward Yak Don National Park which was our well known landmark that is supposed to be 5km before Ya Liao. We quickly were in farm country stopping whenever we passed things unusual or interesting.

Durians, Cashews, Curtains on the Outside
There are fewer concrete and many more wooden houses in this area of Vietnam. Most have a large paved front yard to dry whatever crops are in season. We noticed some kidney shape brown piles being raked and spread to dry. Are these beans or shells? Last thing we expected were cashews. We learned a lot about cashew during our Central America cycle trip. Cashews are native to the Americas.
First we found the cashews drying, then a bit further down the road, cashew trees. Not in a huge plantation but a small cluster of trees here and there. Then there were the guys with massive loads of durian. The motorcycle driver even carried one of those big boys between his legs. Then we passed a few large concrete houses with curtains on the windows – on the outside of the house! Minority ladies were walking to or from the fields with basket and hand tool! It would be great to be able to talk with them. As it was, we could only smile, nod and waive.

Yok Don National Park
The road widened and we got to a big town with a bunch of new large concrete buildings. This town is incongruously placed in the middle of nowhere it seemed. It was a bit like a ghost town with few people or happenings.

We zipped over to the entrance of Yok Don National Park, Vietnam’s largest protected area. A caretaker went by but other than that, the place was deserted. The mixed forest inside the Park looks identical to the mixed forest outside the Park. We found the office. The young man there didn’t know English but was able to communicate that the English speaker would return eventually. We told him we’d stop back later.

We figured the Cham tower was near so started asking for Ya Liao town. Very few knew it and invariably, we’d be told to keep going up the road. After going over a small forested pass and by a small scenic reservoir we found a town that was on our map. We were way north of our destination! We had missed a turn and had to double back.

We got back to where we thought we went wrong and stumbled upon a young gal who spoke very good English! She didn’t recognize the town name but was sure the Cham tower was just 1.5km back toward Ban Don where the road splits. “You don’t need to turn, it is right there”, she said. We got there but still unable to find the tower. We didn’t know what kind of tower to expect, big or small. Now why are we looking so hard for this tower?, we asked ourselves.

Stumbling On Serepok River
We took a dirt side road into the hills. Little settlement where here and there and eventually we’d get to a dead end and find another dirt road to explore. We arrived at a larger groupings of homes, many on stilts, then a quaint village where shops lined both sides of the road. Then it got more congested and we saw tourists on elephants. We had stumbled into Ban Don Tourist area. The one place we were trying to avoid. But now we were there and we took a look around. We paid a dollar to cross the bamboo suspension bridges to a small scenic island. The series of bridges were sturdy but still swayed a lot as we crossed.

It was getting late in the afternoon and cloud cover came. We figured the afternoon rains were on the way. Now as we made our way back toward BMT, villagers were coming out of the wood work. There not fools. They had stayed out of the midday sun.

Now it was overcast and not as hot, they were out and about taking care of chores or visiting each other on the large raised verandas of their long houses. Kids came out to play.

We could see BMT in the distance had gotten hit by the rain. The edge of the storm caught us and gave us a light drizzle for 10 minutes. We parked and waited for it to pass.

It was a long day already and we decided to call it a day without see the tower or getting to either of our destinations. We stopped over at the bus station and bought our tickets for KonTum the next morning.

My Reviews Of The Places I Stayed
Thanh Cong Hotel Buon Ma Thuot
“Clean Solid Choice with Included Breakfast”
-Desk Staff: knows only a little bit English and are willing to try to help.
----helped with ideas for our self guided tour
----they can arrange motorcycle rental
----called bus station for us and verified departure times for us
----taxi cabs wait out front
----recommended a great little restaurant around the corner
-Food: served during breakfast hours only
-Elevator: provides easy access to rooms
-Large rooms, clean floors and linens
-Air Con:sufficient but not great
-Fridge: Yes
-TV: Yes
-Wifi: Yes!
-Shower: worked well / Fan non-functional
-Good Value: More expensive than the skinny mini's along the same road but, considering it included breakfast, it wasa good value.

Our standard room (350k VND) was large and windowless. Ours was vented to the entry hall and wasn't stuffy at all.We checked a room with a window (same price) but it twas sealed and did not open. Fine for light but no view either. Yep!, we'd stay there again!

Thanh Binh Hotel Buon Ma Thuot
“Low Price is the Only Reason to Stay ”
-Desk Staff: knows only a little bit English and tried only a little to help. No heroics here
----They have a tour desk but couldn't help at all
----they directed us to a nearby hotel for cheap motorcycle rental THANKS VERY MUCH!
-Food: no----no breakfast either but drink shop across the road and Nem Nuong (roll your own spring rolls) 10 feet away. Delicious.
-Elevator: no
-Large rooms, clean floors and linens
-Air Con: non-functional
-Fridge: not in our room
-Wifi: Yes!
-Shower: worked poorly- 5 gallon bucket was there for a reason - 7 foot bathroom walls open room at top
-Good Value: Cheap so stay if you are on a very tight budget.

Our standard room (200k VND) was clean, large with window (broken pane. We discovered the Air Con did not work. Staff offered 50k Dong reduction in lieu of attempting repairs. Bathroom turned out to be sub-par. Shower was just a trickle and we assume that is why they had a bucket there. Call it a bucket shower!

Others staying there were happy because of the low price. But we are not on that low of budget so moved the next morning.

Review of a trip to Vietnam

It was with trepidation that we even went to Vietnam. For years, it has been on our list; a war-ravaged rough and tumble back route to travel overland into southern China. That was 20 plus years ago. Back then we had heard how difficult it was for foreign tourists to travel, with the overly aggressive touts and thieves. You always needed to be on guard. Always someone was trying to separate you from your money. Others who had been there agreed with this sentiment. Then 10 years ago, we began hearing stories about how great of place Vietnam was for people looking for someplace a little different. Even six years ago, we traveled briefly with Astrid who told us she wished she had spent less time in Vietnam and more time in Laos. Laotians are so much more laid back and friendly, she said.  Then our new friend, Sander, told us Vietnam is absolutely his favorite country in SE Asia! And it seemed everyone had just been there or is on their way there.  So what's the true story? It was now or never. We decided to give it a look! Best tour company in Vietnam

Upon crossing the border from Cambodia, we immediately noticed a difference. The people of Vietnam appeared to more entrepreneurial. Everyone seemed to be in business. Selling vegetables on the roadside wasn’t good enough. Some set up their vegetables in the middle of the road to better serve the customers driving by on motorcycles. People were pleased to get us into their hotels and restaurants.

Vietnam vacation
Vietnam vacation
Sure we were overcharged on buses and probably paid too much in the markets. There are tourist cartels in some areas set up in an attempt to keep prices up. But nobody took our money and ran. Everyone always kept their end of the bargain.

We tried to be vigilant. Never did we have someone try to run off with one of our bags or rummage through our hotel room. We never had anything go missing. (Okay, my bossy cow toothbrush holder disappeared somewhere along the way - BOO HOO). We ran in to one guy who had his camera disappear from his table in a Hanoi restaurant while he sat right there. He did not know who to suspect. It was there when he sat down and gone when he got up to leave. Overall, it is not anymore dishonest than anywhere else in SE Asia.

We, as tourists, didn’t even notice much heavy-handedness by government officialdom. The press is monitored and policed if they speak out against the regime. But we don’t read local papers. The internet is said to be censored and controlled like in China. But we never experience any blocked content and the transmission rates were good. Controlled capitalism seems to be alive and well! But don’t look for McDonald’s or Walmart (yet); KFC and Big-C, yes. Lack of the international chains is one of the charms of Vietnam. Tours in North Vietnam

Also don’t expect to see environmental damage from napalm or agent orange used in the wars. Nature has a remarkable ability to recover. Vietnam is green and lush and even greener and lusher than its neighbors. Many towns will have a war monument or war museum but it doesn’t seem to be dwelled upon. Young people we saw were raising babies, many babies, growing food and working hard to make better lives for them and their children. Evenings are spent relaxing and socializing on porches and in coffee shops.  People seem to be looking forward and not back.

Except for a few hundred kilometer strip between Saigon and Dalat, we didn’t see ostentatious religious monuments. This strip seemed to have its share of Catholic churches and overt homages. Most the country is Buddhist and the many temples are small neighborhood affairs. We didn't see anything you’d call 'a palace’.

We steered clear of the many beach settlements.

THE HIGHLIGHTS
Cuisine: Two words, "Bun Cha". Two other nice words; “Nem NÆ°á»›ng”. Or two more; “Cao Lầu” Most Vietnam dishes are served with garden fresh vegetables and they don’t pack on the oil like seems mandatory in China. They do a lot of great things with tofu.

Coffee: In restaurants, coffees are definitively hit and miss. We’ve had some of the best and some of the worst. Ice coffee, served as a tiny cup of syrupy coffee with sweet condensed milk over ice, is nice in hot climates. They have the best instant Ca phe hoa tan, a red package you see all over with a #7 on it.  They have plain instant, instant with milk and sugar and 3 different flavors of Cappuccino. We didn’t try the notorious weasel coffee but found a whole bean Arabica that we really love too.

Motorcycle Explorations: Most tourist destinations rent motorcycles or scooters (automatic or manual. Or if you don’t ride, hire an Ex Om for the day, who can show you the best places. The Easy Riders motorcycle guides seem overpriced for what they are.

Ethnic Groups: still easy to find different Minorities with their own dress and traditions.

Mekong Delta: Venice of Vietnam with its maze of waterways. Great place to rent motorcycle or bike and get lost. The floating markets are fast disappearing as more road are built, so see these now.

Dalat:  Laid back and scenic with lots of possibilities to discover surrounding area. LOVED the dried (maybe fried) vegetable chips, mixture of sweet potato, carrot, beets, green beans, okra. XQ Embroidery and Silk was a nice surprise.

Hoi an: Touristy, for good reason. Old town and great shopping with beautiful countryside.

Sapa: This town and surroundings begs to be explored by motorcycle and don’t forget breathtaking hikes. It was one of our most memorable stops and a nice place to linger.

Halong Bay: Yes, it is touristy but this place can’t be skipped. See the reason why it was voted one of the world’s 7 natural wonders.

BOTTOM LINE ON VIETNAM
It is a great tourist destination. Cultural Tourists, who are in to observing the different minority cultures with their unique traditions and customs will find opportunities plentiful in the mountainous areas in the central highlands but more so in the northeast and northwest. Packaged Tourist will love Halong Bay and Hoi An. Independent travelers will love backcountry adventures. Everyone will love the food.

We loved it all. The prices are easy on the budget and the hotels are an extremely good value for the level of the accommodations. Our spending went up a little bit in Vietnam because of big ticket items we bought; air tickets to get out and the Halong Tour.  If our 30-day visa, and 30-day extension, didn’t run out, we’d still be there.

We visited between the tourist high-season (Nov-Mar) and the rainy season (June-on). Except for in Hoi An, no place was crowded with tourists.  It was a bit too hot and we didn’t see much rain. Those with a high temp tolerance will do fine! The weather allows you to travel light any time of year!

Yep, we recommend Vietnam for all type of travelers.

Wierd dishes in Vietnam visitors should try

1 - Thang Co
Thang Co is created by Hmong people in Vietnam, Someone tried to explain the word by Chinese-Vietnamese pronunciation - Thang Co means soup of bones. famous Vietnamese food

Vietnamese food
Vietnamese food
Materials to make Thang Co may be bone and bowels of cows or horses. People in the northern mountainous regions such as Lao Cai , Ha Giang , Yen Bai , when they go to market usually bring a few bags of "men men" or corn cake put in the basket bags and buy a bowl of Thang Co, that is a full quality meal . When the mood is high they can buy a bowl of corn wine.

Processing Thang Co is simple . Cow or horse after slaughter , One filters the hams and muscles apart to sell. The bones are cut to small slices. Tendons, fat and broken parts are filtered out along with curdled blood cut into small pieces plus heart, lung, liver is enough basic materials to make a Thang Co.

After a fire to boil water in a pan, one put everything into the pan and cook constantly and throw away the dirty scum on top. Thang Co is served very hot, diners have to blow to cool it down, salt or spicies are left outside , one can add as much as they like.

2 - "Cha Ruoi"in Hai Duong
Cha Ruoi is made from the most popular ingredients. According to Vietnamese dictionary, Ruoi is a kind of worm, with little hairy body, they are born seasonal and live in breakish water. Ruoi appears the most in late September or October every year.

Hai Duong is in the Red River delta , is surrounded by large rivers full of alluvium flowing out to the sea, it is the meating point, the main junction of rivers and tidal waves that makes breakish water. It is where the Ruoi is born. Ruoi is impossible to raise, outside the season no one can find any Ruoi

However in late September of early October the whole fields are full of immense Ruoi, people picking Ruoi just use a net or a racket, and if want to get more of it one has to spend a little more work. Normally one make a hole on the bank of the field and let water flow through it, and they put a net at the hole to catch Ruoi. One just stands on the bank, put Ruoi into the boat and bring it to market, the best Ruoi is sold to hotels, restaurants in Hanoi, normal class is sold in local markets. Travel Vietnam

One has to know how to choose Ruoi, the Ruoi has to be pink and fat, strong and moving fast in the baskets. After beating Ruoi thoroughly into powder the Ruoi is yellow, Ruoi will be fried with eggs. Cha Ruoi is served with some spices to make it " identity " One cannot just buy additional bacon, fresh duck eggs, posing leaves, ginger , pepper , seasoning , fish sauce especially tangerine peel.

3 - Nhech salad in Thai Binh
In the coastal area of Thai Thuy, beside the famous seafood of Khoai fish one dish is also famous is Nhech salad. Nhech has a similar color and shape as the fresh water eel but a bit longer. The smaller Nhech is the better salad it makes as it's bones are soft, smooth and sweet. Nhech is made clean with firewood ash and leaves. Head and tail are thrown away, only the body is served. Nhech is cut into pieces, from 2-3 cm. Each piece has cuts on it, not completely off apart, then make it dry with towels and put into bowls, sprinkle with fresh chili powder, crushed galangal , rice powder and wait for the flavor to wake up.

Water to make salad taste sour and sweet, make from tomato and sugar. Nhech salad is served with vegetables such as lemon.

The tour is expected to last 7 days including 1 day for travellers to train and get acquainted with the equipment for the trip before the expedition to discover the unique values of the Son Doong cave.

Recently, Quang Binh Province People's Committee has approved the project report to test a tour exploring Son Doong cave at the World Heritage National Park Phong Nha - Ke Bang by Howard Limbert - an expert from British Royal cave explorers.

Under this scheme , to simultaneously accomplish preserving and promoting the value of exploring adventure tourism, through the research process, Limbert has developed a testing tour itinerary to Vietnam to discover Son Doong cave in the form of an optional tour, the tour will be organized as an adventurous climbing trip. The expedition tour will be escorted by local guides, porters as well as support teams to ensure safety throughout the journey.

The Province's authorities have approved the guideline of Son Doong cave exploration however must be in strict conditions to protect and to ensure the preservation and promotion of the values of the world's natural heritage. Until recently the cave hasn't been opened to tourism due to safety conditions. The cave is located near the border between Vietnam and Laos, according to scientists there is an underground river in the cave system.

Journey to Vietnam

Vietnam trip
Vietnam trip
Vietnam is a country charmer, not only for its natural wealth but also for his people. People smile constantly, whether in the chaos of Hanoi, the purity of the mountains of Sapa, "the dragon" of Halong Bay or the richness of the Mekong Delta. So far, the Vietnamese people are more attentive and more grateful to the tourists that we have seen on our trip. Vietnam trip

After spending a couple of days in Hanoi and learn to move on the streets with 1.5 million motorcycles, we assemble in a night train from Hanoi to Sapa in a village near the border with China (Lao Cai). At 6:30 am we woke in the middle of the mountains and we assemble in a bus on a tour of an hour to Sapa ... curves, bends and curves ... Upon arriving at Sapa we were able to bathe in the tourist office (but rudimentary bathroom with hot Agualada! A luxury!) And then have breakfast before beginning the walk to the first hill tribe which would pass the night. The walk was through trails by amid the rice terraces and crossing rivers by stones. Upon reaching the tribe, our guide (an Hmong girl of 18 years dressed in his typical attire) we present to you the owner of the house where we were and told us to choose bed. The house (with a kitchen and bathroom away from the house) had a second floor where there were about 15 mattresses on the floor with pillow each. The owner of the house was called Tam and was perhaps the most beloved lady, willing and happy we met in the mountains. Our guide, Tam a lady of the French-speaking Switzerland who arrived after we did a banquet meal. They gave us rice, meat with vegetables, chicken with vegetables, pork with vegetables, cabbage and spinach water. Do not imagine the taste of all that food cooked in bamboo (forests are bamboo and wood that is used). After the meal Tam and the two girls sat with us at the table and Tam has brought us to make rice wine made by her. Do not let anyone take the empty glass! and put us all sing songs of our countries, including her. The following day when we got up we had Pericos eggs with onions and tomatoes, French bread (inheritance that staying in this whole area, including Cambodia of the French presence, it eats all over the world all the time!), Cheese and bananas. After breakfast of champions began our trek for 8 hours to get to the next tribe where we spent the night in a house similar to that of Tam, but bigger. That night we had a banquet also done in wood and the next morning gave us breakfast crepes with bananas and honey! The three days we were walking in the mountains. All these tribes live in a great community, the children appear to be children of all and walk everywhere alone, there is nobody behind them to see if they fall or drown in the river. These kids run barefoot everywhere and they do not pass anything. Vietnam biking tours

The animals also seem to walk everywhere. After long walks in the middle of the green of the rice terraces we left a couple of days to Halong Bay (personally my main reason to visit Vietnam). In Halong Bay, which is three very long hours in Hanoi bus on a road not taken very well, we had three days of paradise. It is very difficult to describe hundreds of islets leaving the middle of the sea, some taller than others, with different shapes and create some gaps which can only enter through caves. For Vietnam, Halong Bay is a Dragon coming out of the sea, and indeed that if seemed that this set of islets were the ribs of a large dragon. Some of the islands are almost hollow inside, and one can enter the caves. On our second day in Halong Bay we assemble in a kayak and we were able to enter several caves and lagoons where we saw a couple of wild monkeys in one of the mountains! The best part is that at lunchtime in the kayaks took us to an island with a small beach where the only thing there was a cooker lena, a table with a tablecloth and napkins folded in the shape of a fan and three cooks our boat! All those who were in the ride we could not believe that we were having lunch on a desert island, it was like being in a movie! When we finished, the cooks gathered around the island and staying there as if it had not nadia this, because everything rode on a boat to take it to the big boat where we spent two nights.

After feeling like a Hollywood movie set, we went to southern Vietnam. We arrived in Saigon at 10:00 in the evening and at the airport was waiting for a taxi driver who had commanded our inn. The inn where we stayed was in the area of backpackers from Saigon, this area is so big and so important that this marked on all maps of Saigon! There are hundreds of inns, one beside the other and restaurants (all cheap of course). In the photos can see the environment. The next day we went to see the famous Mekong Delta. The richness of the lands of the Mekong is indescribable. For a look at where there are crops of rice, banana, coconut, mango, papaya, guava - such as the Valle del Cauca. Something interesting about the farms of rice is that one sees the crop and there are graves in the middle ... the custom is that the owners of the farms are buried in the middle of their crops so that new generations and to always remember that the dead are close to their land ...

After seeing that the rice in Vietnam have started to taste a little different ... In the Mekong we assemble in a boat that took us to one of the islands first arm of the river (in the Delta River is divided into two major arms each reaching up to 4 km wide). On the island we go down and visit one of the families whose farm coconut and fruit, very poor but very proud to show your home. Alli tried pineapple, pitaya, banana and a type of mamoncillo very rich. After the feast of fruits we assemble in a little boat of wood by one of the rivers that form within the islands and we appreciate even more the wealth of the island known as the island of coconuts.

Vietnam is definitely a great experience and we were very fortunate to have been able to meet him before the great change that is beginning to happen thanks to its entry into the WTO. Will be very interesting to go back to visit this country in 10 years, I hope that people will not lose his joy.
